SPHERE - Valérie GAVEAU

Spatial hearing rehabilitation through action in 3D multisensory space.

Locating and perceiving the three-dimensional (3D) structure of sounds in our environment is at the heart of our ability to segment the auditory scene, discern relevant sounds of noise and direct our attention. Cochlear implants (CI) provide partial recovery of acoustic function and is an opportunity to access sound and speech. While the technological advances in ICs are encouraging, patients still have deficits in 3D location and hearing perception. Currently, rehabilitation of IC patients is limited to language skills and does not aim to improve their 3D hearing abilities. The development of a method for the rehabilitation of the acoustic space of IC patients is particularly urgent. First experimental results based on the interaction between different sensory modalities during learning suggest that 3D spatial hearing rehabilitation could really benefit from interactions between hearing & vision.
